Sustainability

What does it mean to be Sustainable?

In San Joaquin County Lodi Rules has helped to define what it means to be a sustainable farmer. They have simplified it to be, a farmer who emphasizes the use of nature and integrated pest management to protect  and grow the crops, while also holding the viewpoint that being economically viable is essential. With this perspective, the business, as well as caring for its employees through protecting safety and well-being, is of equal importance as farming the land sustainability.

Specifics

Sustainable agriculture is the practice of farming using principles of ecology, the study of relationships between organisms and their environment. It has been defined as an integrated system of plant and animal production practices having a site-specific application that will, over the long term:

  • Satisfy human food and fiber needs

  • Make the most efficient use of non-renewable resources and on-farm resources and integrate, where appropriate, natural biological cycles and controls

  • Sustain the economic viability of farm operations

  • Enhance the quality of life for farmers and society as a whole

  • Protect the existing local ecosystem ( we have implemented the use of Owl and Bat boxes in all of our vineyards)

What we do to be Sustainable

Mohr-Fry Ranches has implemented the Lodi Rules guidelines of sustainability to our practices in order to produce a safer work environment for employees, the community, the environment and crops produced.  Mohr-Fry believes in the "three E's":  environment, social equity, and economics to help preserve the balance of the environment, people, and business.

We proudly follow the Lodi Rules standards of sustainable farming. Lodi Rules is the first 3rd party non-profit organization that has helped to promote sustainable farming among the growers. They use a team of scientists and specialists in the fields of academia and the environment to create and uphold these standards.  Farmers who are "certified sustainable" by Lodi Rules standards produce:

  • High quality crops

  • Healthy soil, clean water and clean air

  • Safe work environment for farmers and farm workers
